A Complete Guide to Smudges, Dust, and How to Keep Your Lenses Crystal Clear
Wearing glasses is a daily ritual for millions of people, whether they’re needed for reading, driving, or simply seeing the world more clearly.
But, no matter why you wear your glasses, there’s one thing every glasses wearer can relate to:
Smudged, dirty lenses.
Within minutes of cleaning your glasses, your lenses can get covered in fingerprints, smudges, or a mysterious film — and it doesn’t matter how careful you are.
So, why do glasses get dirty so quickly?
And, more importantly, how can you prevent it from happening as fast?
In this blog, we’ll take you through the main reasons your glasses get dirty so fast — and what you can do to keep your glasses cleaner for longer.
Let’s get started!
Why Do My Glasses Get Dirty So Quickly?
1. Natural Skin Oils & Fingerprints
Your hands are one of the biggest culprits when it comes to dirty lenses.
Every time you adjust your glasses — even slightly — your fingers leave behind oils, sweat, and tiny debris, no matter how clean they are. Even freshly washed hands have natural sebum (or oil) on them, which can easily transfer to your lenses.
2. Airborne Particles: Dust, Pollen, & Pollution
Glasses act like mini windshields for your eyes, and they collect just as much dust.
If you live in a city, walk by traffic, spend time outdoors, or even cook without a vent hood, your lenses can pick up airborne particles. Things like dust and dirt, smoke, pollen, pet dander, and tiny oil droplets from cooking can make your glasses dirty without you knowing.
→ Tip: Take extra care of your glasses on days with wind and heavy pollen, or after being near open windows.
3. Makeup, Skincare, & Hair Products
Makeup, skincare, and hair products can easily transfer onto your glasses, whether you’re wearing foundation, moisturizer, sunscreen, or even applying hairspray.
The oils, powders, and silicones in these products often leave a hazy film on your glasses, making your lenses look cloudy. It can also be very difficult to wipe off, meaning you’ll have to wash your entire pair of glasses, lenses included.
(Don’t worry — we’ll teach you how to do that later on!)
4. Temperature Changes & Humidity
Have you ever stepped from a cold room into hot, humid air — or vice versa— and had your glasses fog up?
Fog can often dirty your lenses, leaving behind water spots or smears that are difficult to wipe off. In fact, trying to wipe off spots caused by fog can actually make things worse, as you spread around the moisture and oils instead of removing them!
5. Poor Cleaning Habits
Using the wrong materials or cleaning techniques to clean your glasses can make them dirtier or even damage them. Common cleaning mistakes include:
• Wiping lenses with your shirt hem, which often contains lint or rough fibers
• Breathing on the lens and then rubbing it dry, which just spreads oils around
• Using paper towels/tissues to rub smudges, which can scratch the lens coating
→ Did You Know? Micro-scratches from improper cleaning can actually trap dirt, making your lenses look dirty even when they’re clean.
How to Keep Your Glasses Clean Longer
There are lots of things that can make your glasses dirty… but there are also lots of ways to keep your glasses clean for longer.
By adopting the right habits and using the right tools, you can extend the time between cleanings and enjoy clearer vision all day.
Clean Your Lenses Daily (the Right Way)
Use a lens-safe, alcohol-free cleaning spray and a clean microfiber cloth for daily cleaning.
Here’s how:
1. Spray both sides of the lenses with your cleaning spray.
2. Use a microfiber cloth to gently wipe the lenses in a circular motion.
3. Buff your lenses with a dry part of the microfiber cloth to remove streaks.
→ Tip: Avoid using household glass cleaners to clean your lenses. They often contain ammonia, which can damage the coating(s) on your eyeglasses!
Wash Your Frames Weekly
Your frames can collect oil and grime, especially around the nose pads and temples. That’s hwy it’s important to wash your frames weekly.
Here’s how:
• Rinse your glasses under lukewarm water.
• Apply a tiny amount of mild, lotion-free dish soap to the frames.
• Use your fingers to gently clean all areas of the frame with the soap.
• Rinse your frames thoroughly, then pat dry with a clean, microfiber cloth.
→ Tip: Don’t forget to clean the nose pads! They often get overlooked during the cleaning process, but they’re magnets for sweat and skin oils.
Keep a Cleaning Kit with You
Keep a mini cleaning kit with you in your bag, car, office, or backpack, so you can easily access the materials you need for a proper, on-the-go clean.
Here’s what we recommend adding to your cleaning kit:
• A small spray bottle with lens-safe cleaning solution
• A microfiber cloth (stored in a pouch to keep it clean)
• Pre-moistened lens wipes (alcohol-free)
Handle Your Glasses Properly
Properly handling your glasses makes it easier to keep them clean, too.
Always remove or adjust your glasses using both hands, holding them by the temples (arms) or the bridge. Never remove your glasses by touching the lenses!
Store Your Glasses the Right Way
When you’re not wearing your glasses, the best way to keep them clean is by properly storing them. So, when not in use:
• Place your glasses in a clean, hard-shell case
• Never store them lens-down on a surface
• Avoid tossing them into bags or pockets unprotected.
→ Tip: A clean case = cleaner glasses. Make sure to regularly clean the inside of your glasses case, too.
Ask About Anti-Smudge Lens Coatings
When buying new OSSA Frames, ask about lenses with anti-smudge lens coatings, like:
• Oleophobic coatings that repel oils and reduce smudging
• Hydrophobic coatings that repel water and resist fog
• Anti-static coatings that help prevent dust buildup
These coatings help your lenses stay cleaner for longer and make daily care easier.
Bonus OSSA Tips for Cleaner Glasses
→ Keep extra cleaning cloths handy in your car, desk, gym bag, etc.
→ Replace microfiber cloths often. Once they’re dirty, they just move oil around.
→ Schedule deep cleanings once a month to give your frames and lenses a nice deep clean.
→ Avoid alcohol or ammonia-based cleaners as they can strip the protective coating(s) from your lenses.
→ Don’t use hot water to clean your glasses because it can warp frames and damage coatings.
Take Care of Your Glasses and They’ll Take Care of You
Clean glasses aren’t just about looks. They protect your eyes, improve your vision, and keep your glasses in top condition for as long as possible.
And when you wear OSSA Frames, you’re investing in both style and quality, so it only makes sense to care for them the right way!
