How to maintain a vision for many years
The eyes are a significant and vulnerable organ. During human life, the load on the eyes increases. If you don't give the eyes due attention, then over time, vision becomes worse, and characteristic diseases appear.
There are a few simple rules following which you can protect your eyes from the aggressive effects of external factors. It will help maintain eye health and prevent the development of characteristic diseases.
Let's rest our eyes
In today's world, we can't completely give up work or recreation related to the use of gadgets. But it’s important to remember that prolonged exposure to their screens can lead to the development of dry eyes, fatigue, and even myopia. So try to follow the 20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break during which you look at something located at a distance of 5-6 meters from you.
Wear sunglasses
And not only in summer: as soon as the sun gets bright enough, you should think about your glasses: ultraviolet affects the retina of the eyes as dangerously as it does to the skin. And it can even lead to the development of melanoma. Therefore, don’t neglect glasses and wear them even on cloudy days because ultraviolet can damage your eyes even in cloudy weather.
Keep your distance
When working with a phone or reading text from an e-book or tablet, don’t forget to keep the gadget at the maximum safe distance for vision – ideally, it shouldn’t be less than 30 cm. The closer your eyes are to the blue light emitted by phones and tablets, the more they are dangerous.
Get an annual eye exam
A comprehensive eye examination can determine your risk of eye diseases. It also helps ensure that your eyeglasses or contact lenses prescription is up to date and, as far as possible, you see clearly and are not in danger.
Special meals
People with impaired vision need to eat foods that strengthen the vessels of the eye retina: blueberries, black currants, and carrots. Cod liver, greens: parsley, lettuce, dill, and green onions should be in the diet of myopic. The fruits of rose hips (infusion, decoction) and cranberries help with eye dystrophy.
Eye strain protection
- Take breaks while working at your computer. Try to take a 15-minute break every 2 hours while working at the computer. Let your eyes rest every 20 minutes by looking away from the screen and around.
- Work in good light. Your eyes need enough light to read, write, work on a computer or watch TV. In poor lighting and in the dark, the eyes have to concentrate more, which leads to visual strain.
- Use suitable glasses or lenses. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, it’s important that they always fit your eyes and the type of work you do.
- Maintain good air quality. Keep your eyes moisturized and improve your vision by using a humidifier; create a comfortable temperature, and avoid smoke and other pollutants.
How to protect your eyes while working at a computer
- Comfortable lighting. It’s better to equip the workplace to the left or right of the window to let daylight fall on the monitor from the side. Placing the monitor opposite or in front of a window is uncomfortable and puts excessive strain on the eyes. There should not be images of different brightness in the field of view, so it’s better to close the windows with curtains or blinds. If you can’t place the table the way you want, you can purchase an anti-glare screen.
- Artificial lighting should be uniform and sufficient. You can’t work on the monitor by the light of table lamps alone. Indirect diffused light should be used, which doesn’t give reflections on the screen.
- Place the screen so that your eyes are level with the top edge of the screen. Better to tilt the monitor to place the bottom is closer to you than the top. It will make the level of inclination of the visual axis optimal.
- Keep the screen clean, and rub it from dust and dirt with special wipes that don’t leave streaks.
- If you work with glasses, clean your lenses regularly with a soft cloth. It’s better to order particular glasses with a protective coating from the adverse effects of the radiation of a flickering screen. If you have normal vision, you can book glasses without diopters.
- The monitor should be at a distance of 50-60 cm from the eyes. If the font is small and hard to read, select a larger one. Drink plenty of water and don't forget to blink to keep your eyes moist and prevent them from feeling dry and gritty.
- Regularly during the working day, do exercises for the eyes every 1-2 hours. They are simple and don’t require much time, allowing you to relax and train the muscles of the eyes.
Take care of your vision! Visit an ophthalmologist regularly and follow these simple rules.
